Where to shop in Dorking

Where to shop in Dorking

Where to shop in Dorking? That’s the question we always hear people ask. Dorking is sometimes labelled with the stigma of being small and old-fashioned. Yes, we are small. But no – we’re most certainly not old fashioned.

In recent years Dorking has become a hub of thriving independent shops, all on a high street that’s less than a mile long. And we’re proud to be one of those.

So (aside from us at Victoria’s Little Bra Shop, obviously) here’s some of the independent shops we recommend to visit in Dorking.

WestDaw Menswear

The new kid on the block! WestDaw Menswear opened its doors in December and is a hub of high-end, stylish men’s clothing and accessories. The perfect place for men to have a browse while women treat themselves in our little boutique.

Looking for the perfect outfit for a special occasion? Or love your designer brands? Then you need a trip to Bakehouse. Situated on Pump Corner it’s a trove of beautiful womenswear, while the personal touch in store is something you just won’t find in M&S.

Dorking’s one-stop-shop for our resident crafters. Endless reams of wool, fabric and felt line the walls and you won’t be bored with the bold and beautiful colours that fill your senses as you walk through the door. They’re also known for their guerrilla knitting found brightening up the town!

Gorgeous Gerties

Another West Street favourite. Gorgeous Gerties is a charming tea room (with to-die-for afternoon tea, in case you were wondering!) with a treasure trove of locally produced products upstairs. You’ll find a bit of everything from bunting and buttons to handmade wax melts and beautiful scarves – trust us, you won’t leave empty handed.

Vintage Shrewd

A vintage shop that’s a must for any keen shopper. Fashion, jewellery, art and homewares are just a few of the things you’ll find in this gorgeous little shop. Just make sure you’ve got a little time to spend in there, you can get lost in there for hours!

  • 7 South Street, Dorking, Surrey, RH4 2DY

Plus – a special shout out to S.C. Fuller, who celebrated their 125th birthday this year and are the longest running shop in Dorking – congratulations!

So that’s our favourite shops, next time – our favourite foodie spots, cafes and bars! And don’t forget, there are so many more wonderful shops to visit, we just couldn’t fit them all on one blog post. So for a full list of Dorking shops, take a look here.

Our 4 Favourite Lingerie Blogs

4 Best Lingerie Blogs

Lingerie blogs – we can’t get enough of them. We love reading these women’s opinions of brands, bra styles, and fashion. They ooze confidence, they’re empowered and love lingerie as much as we do. So we want to share these insightful lingerie blogs with you ladies, and hopefully give you a bit of inspiration for your lingerie collection.

This blog, although written by the beautifully fuller-figured, fuller-busted Georgina Horne, is a great read for women of all sizes. Her posts have a big focus on lingerie, but in recent years she’s diverged more into fashion and fitness too. Her passion of the beautiful is evident, while her

Big Cup Little Cup

Big Cup Little Cup Lingerie Blog

This two-piece blog is written by friends, Char and Sian – both different bra sizes and working their way through the wonderful world of bras. Their posts consist mainly of reviews (separated shrewdly into big cups and little cups) and heaps of handy guides from bra fitting.

What they say:

“Run by Sian (Big Cup at 28GG) and Char (Little Cup at 30D). You’ll find lingerie reviews from us and our “Guest Cups”, undercover work in the lingerie underworld, wishlists and all things bra related.”

Check out:

Their “So you think you know what a D cup looks like?” post. It perfectly outlines how different cup sizes change depending on the back size, a confusion we so often see from customers who come in and see us.

So these are just four of our favourite lingerie blogs, but we’re always looking for more! Let us know your favourites.

Spotlight on: Wacoal Embrace Lace

Wacoal Embrace Lace Camisole in Black

We’re putting a spotlight on the Wacoal Embrace Lace collection. From the moulded bras to the briefs and the gorgeous chemises, the Embrace Lace range of lingerie has something for everyone.

We love how versatile this range is. Not only is glamour and style at the heart of the collection, each piece is incredibly practical too. Its signature look is the embroidered lace which adorns every piece of underwear, all in stunning contrasting colours.

The Embrace Lace collection comes in easy-to-wear nude and black colourways, as well as a whole range of stunning fashion colours. The stunning contrasting colours is why we continue to go back to it year after year, and why it’s a firm customer favourite.

After fitting this collection on women of all shapes and sizes, here’s a few pointers when deciding on your size. The back comes up fairly firm. If you’re closer to the back size above, try opting for the band size up to ensure optimum comfort. The briefs come up very true to size, so go with your usual jean size for the best fit.

Here’s a look into different products in the Embrace Lace Range:

Wacoal Embrace Lace Contour Bra

One of our favourites to fit women in, in the bra shop, the contour bra boasts smooth cups that make it ideal for wearing under your t-shirts, without any seams. While the full coverage provides impressive support for those with a fuller bust.

We love the side support that this underwire bra gives. It brings your bust forward, creating a slim line silhouette so it’s great for fuller, rounder busts. The all-over lace detailing makes it stand out from the crowd too – great for feeling ultra-feminine in an everyday bra.

Wacoal Embrace Lace Chemise

We’re smitten with Wacoal’s range of chemises. They’re intricately designed with floral detailing, while the scalloped edges flatter your silhouette. They’re pretty, practical and should be a staple of any women’s wardrobe. Our favourite way to wear it? With a pair of jeans and tailored blouse for an evening on the town!

Wacoal Embrace Lace Short

Our favourite, ultra-flattering briefs that every woman should own. The shorty style has been designed to suit every figure, from curvaceous hips to more athletic figures. We love how the low leg provide that extra bit of coverage and makes us feel endlessly confident.

Wacoal Embrace Lace Brief

We love the easy-to-wear style of the briefs. They’re delicately designed with the lace detailing across the front and all-over sheer fabric at the rear. Best of all, we think they provide the perfect amount of coverage!

Moda Lingerie and Swimwear Show 2017

Models on Moda Lingerie and Swimwear Show Catwalk

It’s our favourite time of year – the Moda Lingerie and Swimwear Show. And last week we made our way up to Birmingham for our annual trip. After travelling down Saturday evening after a busy day in the shop, it was early to bed before the Sunday show.

Following a morning of blow dries, manicures and assembling outfits, we were ready for a busy day of fashion lingerie, wine and beautiful women (oh, and of course business!) – a little more glamorous than our usual Sundays.

Catwalk shows

Moda Lingerie and Swimwear Show Catwalk

We were lucky enough to be invited to the Moda show as VIP guests! This meant a luxury hotel and complimentary drinks throughout the day – well, picking beautiful lingerie is thirsty work!

The buzz was incredible! As the models strutted their stuff down the catwalk, the wine was flowing and music pounded from the stage. We saw the upcoming fashions for the seasons ahead and fell in love the stunning array of blues, proving to be favourites for Autumn/Winter. Collections also came along in reds, greens and of course blacks – so you’ll be seeing some truly gorgeous colours hitting our shelves in the coming months.

Scouting for stock

Vanessa Legg at Moda Lingerie and Swimwear Show

Before our meetings with our lovely lingerie reps, we made the most of the opportunity to see what else is about. We’re always on the lookout for something new and things that catch our eye. The beauty of Moda is that there’s always a handful of smaller, independent designers. We love taking a look around and checking out their new lines, seeing the beautiful lingerie they have to offer.

However, this year we had a mission – we were on the lookout for some new swimwear lines to sit alongside out current collections. And we’re pleased to say we think we’ve found an exciting new collection for our little boutique. We’re not saying any more for now, but watch this space – we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Modelling the collection

Wacoal Lingerie at Moda

We spent our afternoon meeting with our reps from Fantasie, b.tempt’d and Wacoal, immersing ourselves in their gorgeous new collections being modelling by an abundance of beautiful women. What lucky ladies we are!

The models are brilliant, working tirelessly showcasing all the different lingerie for us. This is such an important part of selecting the right collections. Seeing how they fit and how different they look compared to on the hanger. Best of all the models are what you’d call ‘true women’. And with all their confidence they’ve got lumps, bumps and come in different shapes and sizes. It means we get an idea of what the lingerie will look like on our customers, real women who come in and see us every day.

Moda comes to an end

Brochures at Moda Lingerie and Swimwear Show

No day at the Moda Lingerie and Swimwear Show would be complete without a glass of wine in the Skytop Lounge – a welcome reward after a busy day and a chance to catch up on notes.

We saw some really exciting collections, which will soon be gracing our shelves ready for you lovely lot. Luckily for us picking and choosing our collections is all about fun, we tend to agree on colours and designs – no mother-daughter squabbles there!

After a restful evening and an early night, the next morning we sent a few more hours with our reps and bid farewell to Moda for another six months. A few hours on the motorway later, and we’re home – filled with anticipation and excitement of what’s to come. You’re in for a treat ladies!

Ladies and gents, here’s how to shop for Valentine’s Day

Valentine's day buying guide

February 14th – Valentine’s Day. The perfect date to show your loved one how much they mean to you, and perhaps inject a little spark back into your relationship.

But if your Valentine’s Day usually consists of a box of chocolates and a bunch of flowers from the local garage, perhaps it’s time to up your game. And what better way than with a stunning new piece of lingerie?

So to give you guys a helping hand, here’s some top tips for giving her a Valentine’s Day she’ll remember.

Sneak a look at her size

Before you pop down to see us or browse our website, take a look in her underwear drawer. Look for her bra and knicker size (Example: 32C, 10) and the styles she likes. Are the bras padded or soft? Lacy? Colourful?

Choose something unique

The best thing about giving lingerie as a gift is that it won’t usually be something they would buy themselves. While women often focus on the practical aspect, now’s the perfect time to pick something with a little glamour to make her feel confident and sexy. If she’s already a connoisseur in luxury lingerie, even better! That’s half the job done for you!

Complete the set

If you’re going for particularly sexy set with a garter belt, don’t forget the stockings to go with it. Seeing you’ve thought of the whole package will definitely earn you extra bonus points!

Nightwear can also be sexy

Not sure about delving into the world of lingerie? Why not treat her to something a little different. Silk nightwear and lacy chemises are not only exceptionally beautiful, they’re much easier to pick the right size too – just pick from small, medium or large.

Not just any old voucher

While buying a gift voucher can often be seen as a bit of a get-out, when it’s for luxury lingerie the same rules don’t apply. Our gift vouchers come gift wrapped in beautiful gift boxes then finished with a bow. Or why not get a gift experience? This voucher entitles them to a private viewing when the shop is shut with £100 to spend in store, as well as nibbles and bubbly. You can even come along together!

So with just 14 days to go until the big day. It’s time to get shopping! And if you still need a little extra guidance, on Thursday 9th February we’re holding an open evening with local Dorking stores, Bakehouse and Jackdaws Menswear. It’s the perfect opportunity for men and women to pick up something special for Valentines – with a nice cold beer or glass of bubbly as you shop.

As a lady in in her fifties I can quite confidently say a big YES to this question! Age is not an excuse and there is no reason as to why your lingerie should not be beautiful and indeed sexy.  Here are a few reasons why buying underwear that’ll make you feel slim, sexy and supported once you hit your 50’s-  and beyond – will do you the power of good!…

Self Confidence

I can obviously indulge my passion for lingerie but I fit ladies all the time who might just pop in for a white or black bra but when they venture to try on a pretty one immediately change their minds.  This is all too often accompanied by purchasing the matching knickers to complete the look… and WOW!   Just knowing you are looking your best in your undies does wonders for your self-confidence – regardless of whether or not anyone else sees it! Whether this is in the workplace or bedroom, wearing lingerie that gives you a boost will make you feel a million dollars.

As we grow older, it’s all too easy to get stuck in a rut with your lingerie and not pay attention to how it fits or looks.  When we hit our fifties and go through the menopause, it’s a really key time to update your lingerie as hormone changes can drastically change your body shape and of course your bra size.  The menopause effects women in different ways and whilst some women will go down a cup size or two, some women will increase in both cup size and back size!

What type of bra is most flattering?

The most obvious change in a ladies bust as she gets older is that gravity takes over and we lose a lot of definition and fullness.  This is where wearing the correct fitting bra for your bust comes into play and if you get this right can absolutely make a real difference to your silhouette making you feel and look AMAZING!

The Balconette

There are many style types but the most flattering for a bust that has lost its fullness is the balconette.  This shape is the mature ladies best friend, giving you a great cleavage as it pushes you upwards so that you appear fuller.  Its great to keep the curves in the right place whatever age you are!! Below are some of our favourites at Victoria’s Little Bra Shop:

The Full Cup

For a bust that is on the fuller, heavy side we would recommend a good fitting full cup which gives fantastic support along with comfort and fantastic shape.  These bras come in all colours and sizes, including really pretty, sexy ones which flatter and enhance your shape. Here are some of our top picks:

So, what are you waiting for!?

Pop in and see us at Victoria’s Little Bra Shop in Dorking, Surrey and we will be more than happy to help you sculpt your figure, lift your bust and boost your confidence.
